Pakistan was formed in 1947 when it combined with the area that is now Bangladesh, was spun off from British India. The rest of British India became independent India. The name Pakistan means “pure land”, and it was intended that it should be a pure Muslim state. The division into India and Pakistan led to millions of people had to cross the border to be in the country that their religion belonged. Yet many Muslims in India, while nearly all Hindus and other indigenous peoples were expelled from Pakistan by Muslims.

The name Pakistan means “pure land” in Urdu and Persian. It was created in 1934 by Choudhary Rahmat Pakstan of Ali, who published it in his pamphlet Now or Never. The name represented the “thirty million Muslims in PAKSTAN who live in the five northern units of British India – Punjab, Afghania ( also known as North-West Frontier Province), Kashmir, Sindh and Balochistan.
