Akrotiri and Dhekelia are two military base areas under British sovereignty in Cyprus . Akrotiri is located in the south near Limassol and Dhekelia in the south-east near Larnaca. The United Kingdom maintained the base due to its strategic position in the Mediterranean Sea.
